In our recent trip to Kenya, we finally met with Kelvin Malack and his artist brother Albert Lizah. It was great to meet up with them! Both Liz and I were taken aback at how young these guys are – and so talented!
Kelvin Malack and his brother went to primary school in Naivasha, Kenya, and had the good fortune to live next to one of Kenya preeminent artist, Sane Wadu, who became his mentor. Though Wadu was a strong influence, it was only when Malack and Lizah started painting together that they started to develop their own techniques. As one of the brothers said, ‘We paint under one roof with one mind, and train each other.’
‘Painting brings me joy. I paint when I’m feeling sad and happy, and you can tell a lot by the colors in my paintings. Like that one (pointing towards Baobab Everywhere), I think on that day it was cold and rainy. You see? It looks funny – dark and scary. I don’t like the rain.’ He said laughing.
