On trip to Kenya a while back, we had the good fortune to meet up with Daniel Augusta, the former manager of the TingaTinga Artists Cooperative Society (TACS), and his lovely girlfriend Desderia. Daniel and I had been communicating by email for years, but had never met. Liz and I were very excited to not only meet him and Desderia, but we knew that with him he would have a selection of the best TingaTinga paintings in the world!
Daniel and Desderia took a 24 hour bus ride from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, to Nairobi specifically and for no other reason than to meet with Liz and I, and bring us a huge selection of TingaTinga paintings straight from the TACS member artists themselves. What an incredibly gracious gesture on their part.
With two 50 lb. PVC pipes full of paintings slung over his shoulders, we all met at the famous Gallery Watatu on Standard Street and not only enjoyed each others company, but shared the trials and tribulations of the TACS and its dealings with unlikely companies like Disney and Lion Aspect of the UK – of the children’s morning show TingaTinga Tales.
Daniel, the world’s most renowned TingaTinga-ist, bled passion about his work and the life he and Desderia are leading in Tanzania – totally immersed in a TingaTinga lifestyle – even living in the home once occupied by Edward S. Tingatinga himself!
If you would like to see the most comprehensive collection of paintings and information about TingaTinga art and the artists that create it, you should really visit Daniel Augusta’s websites. You can start here with TingaTinga Studio. If you explore further you will find that it’s actually a conglomeration of websites that encompass the width and breadth of the evolution TingaTinga art and its artists from the beginning of time.
By the way, have you seen the paintings by Daudi S. Tingatinga? He’s Edward TingaTinga’s son.
